Wanganui is a provincial city with a population of 40,000 situated 170 km north of the capital city Wellington, on State Highway 3 at the month of the picturesque Wanganui River on the west coast of the north island. A scenic city with many diverse activities.

The Whanganui River

The mighty Whanganui River , steeped in history, commences its journey at Mt Tongariro. It is the longest navigable river in New Zealand and winds its way through 239 rapids ending its journey at the Tasman Sea.  It flows through the centre of Wanganui and is rich in tradition, legend and mystery.

Ideally suited for kayak and canoe trips and speed boats. These trips can be hourly or over a period of days. A mail run travels daily on week days up the picturesque Wanganui River Road to historic Jerusalem. Travelers on this excursion can be picked up at the main gate or you can take your own car. There re also numerous bush and historic walks in and around the Wanganui district. A trip up the Wanganui River Road is not to be missed and the Waimarie Paddlesteamer runs daily up the Wanganui River.

The parks & gardens of Wanganui range from the extensive Bason Botanic Gardens to the tranquillity of Virginia Lake or the fairytale world of the children's playground at Kowhai Park which includes 20 acres of skateboard park, large galleon/playboat, miniature trains and track, water bumper boats, mini golf, go karts, flying fox.

Wanganui is rich and diverse in heritage . It is one of New Zealand's oldest European settlements and many of the early buildings being carefully preserved.  The museum is one of the best is the country with large selection of Maori artifact and natural history.
